THE DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

The Doubles event took place on Saturday 16th May, and 18 league players did battle to win the top prize. Organisers Ron Kemp and Jim Hall put the 9 teams into three groups of three teams, and the winners plus the best runner up progressed to the semi-finals.

 

Group 1

Alex Rorke / Jim Hall beat John Winkles / John Moyse 7, 7, 3

Alex / Jim beat Paul Freeborn / Dean Whittingham 8, 2, 8

Paul / Dean beat John / John -7, 4, 2, 5

 

Group 2

George Downing / Scott Lawson beat Roger Nevell / Steve White 3, 5, 5

George / Scott beat Pauline Rorke / Bert Paice 4, 4, 8

Roger / Steve beat Pauline / Bert -8, 4, 6, 5

 

Group 3

Lee Orton / Simon Underhay beat Roger Hookey / Jill Fothergill 6, 6, 8

Ron Kemp / Andy Ely beat Lee / Simon -10, 4, 9, 6

Ron / Andy beat Roger / Jill 5, 8, -7, 8

 

The three winners of the groups, Alex / Jim, George / Scott and Ron / Andy progressed directly to the semi-finals. The second placed teams fought it out in a qualifying group, and Lee / Simon beat both other teams to take the final place in the semi-final.

 

Semi-Final 1 saw Lee and Simon just fail to beat Alex and Jim, going very close at 13, -6, 7, 10

Semi-Final 2 was even closer, and from two games to nil down, Scott and George came through to beat Ron and Andy -7, -8, 4, 5, 8

 

Final

Another close and interesting game with attackers Scott and George throwing caution to the wind in an attempt to pierce the defence of Alex and counter hits of Jim. From one game down, the experience pair came through to take the next three and the title.
