GUILDFORD CUP 2009 by Dave Williams
The Singles Handicap Guildford Cup Tournament took place on Tuesday 29th September 2009 at the Carl Prean Centre (CPC) near Ryde. 27 players entered the event, and playing on 7 tables, 6 groups of 4 and one of three were contested. The winners of the groups went through to the quarter final stage, and included one “lucky” runner up from the groups.
Quarter Finals:
1. Ron Kemp’s spin and speed were to much for Richard Jackson. Richard had received a start of 9, the final score being 26-22, 26-14
2. Steady Martin Dove narrowly beat Dave Rendle in a game off scratch. Scores were 21-19, 21-16
3. Jim Hall, giving a 12 start, squeezed through against Roy Wiltshire 25-27, 26-24, 26-18.
4. In the closest encounter of the night, George Downing was given a scare by Derek Pittard in this match where George had to give 17 points start per game. Derek was a comfortable winner in the first, but back came George to snatch the next two and take his place in the semi. Scores were 20-26, 26-21, 28-26
Semi-Finals:
1. Ron received a 6 start in this all Division 1 clash, and although Jim did well to close the gap early on, in both games Ron raced away to win in two. Scores 26-17, 26-17
2. Another tight match, where George, giving Martin 12 points start, just pipped the veteran 26-17, 29-27
Final:
With a start of 9, Ron had to use all his experience to stop the aggressive attacking play from his younger opponent, and although the serve was returned well, when a rally developed there was only going to be one winner, as George hit brilliantly from all angles. The second game saw Ron extend his 9-0 lead to 14-0, but George soon hit back and won with ease in two games. A worthy winner!
Final Score: George Downing beat Ron Kemp 26-20, 26-22
The evening was enjoyed by all who took part, and was organised by Karen King.
