THE HAMPSHIRE INTER-TOWN TOURNAMENT

by John Prean

A STAR IS BORN!

The Island County Team narrowly missed gold in the annual Hampshire Inter-town weekend. They defeated Andover 6-0, Basingstoke 4-2 and shared the spoils in an exciting 3-3 draw with Bournemouth in the final match. A countback of sets was ordered, and the Island was found to have lost by 12 sets to 11.

Teenager Scott Lawson (CPC Appley) was unbeaten with 6 wins and his victories included Mark Butler who has often been seen on the Island as Captain of Hampshire. Scott definitely moved  a rung up the ladder with a mature display of fine all-round play. Roger Hookey was his reliable self with only one defeat, that against Butler, but George Downing (14 in May) may need another season to equal the heights reached by his colleagues this time. He played many good shots, and his future is undoubted.
