ISLAND GAMES 2011 FUND RAISING

Jim Hall’s Karaoke evening on Saturday 14th November at the Simeon Arms in Ryde raised over £130 for the Island Games fund.

Well done to Jim and his band of merry helpers!

Running total now more than £500!!

The race night was held on Sunday 18th October, and although not as many people turned up to support the event as we had hoped, more than £330 was raised for the Games.

Congratulations to the organisers, Roger and Jan, and to those who came along and shouted at the screen!

A Christmas Table Tennis Tournament on Sunday 20th December was organised by Roger and Jan Hookey, and £136 was raised for the Games fund.

The Tournament was held at Newport Vics club in Newport, and the most experienced player was teamed up with the least experience in a handicap doubles event.

Mince pies and Christmas cake along with other refreshments were on sale.

Grand Auction - 13th March 2010

Ryde Table Tennis Club held an auction on behalf of the IWCTTA Island Games Fund Raising Project at the Wootton Community Centre on Saturday 13th March 2010.

There were more than 70 lots available, and the majority went under the hammer of Tim from the Shanklin Auction Rooms!!

The event was (almost) run on the same format as the Brian Warne tournament, and 18 players including some youngsters came along.

Group 1:

Winners - Don & Blair Hobbs; 2nd place - Glen & Kieran Morley

3rd place - Roger Hookey & Dave Williams; 4th place - George Downing & Derek Hayles

Group 2:

Winners - Andrew Ely & Karen King; 2nd place - Paul Freeborn & Trevor Percival

3rd place - Jill Fothergill & James Halliday; 4th place - Lee Orton & Jon Baker

5th place - Julie Thorn & Trevor Farmer

As Trevor Percival and Jill Fothergill both had to go, James Halliday joined Paul Freeborn to play in the Semi-Final.

Semi-Final 1: Paul & James were too powerful for Glen & Kieran, winning 26-24, 26-23.

Semi-Final 2: Don & Blair Hobbs overcame Andrew & Karen 26-24, 27-25.

Final: The father and son partnership won the first game 26-23, Paul and James came back to win the second 32-30, and then the third 26-24 to win the tournament.

Congratulations to Paul Freeborn and James Halliday and to the organisers!!!!

Running Total now more than £650!!

It is very pleasing to report that more than £900 was raised on the day, this money will go directly to the Island Games fund. This means that the running total for the fund raising is now more than £1550, equating to three of the twelve tables and accessories needed for the tournament.

So keep arranging these events, as there is still much more money needed!

Congratulation go to organisers Martin Dove, Pauline Rorke and Ron Kemp for all of the work they undertook to boost the funds for the Games. The IWCTTA and ultimately the clubs on the Island will all benefit from their efforts, as the IWCTTA will be able to host the tournament, and the clubs will receive tables and nets once the tournament is finished.

Even with all of the publicity arranged by the organisers, it is sad that only 7 table tennis players appeared on the day, one leaving before the auction started. Another very poor attendance by people who will ultimately benefit from these events.......
