Results from Week 1 (week ending 9th October 2009)

Division 1

 

Havenstreet A take top spot in Division 1 thanks to a 10-0 win over Rookley Dogs, with newcomer Mike Lee winning all his games in three. Closest game was Kevin Gatrell’s win over Steve White which finished 11-9 in the fifth.

 

The new team of Shanklin Piranhas were up against last years winners CPC Appley, and although many games were close, lost 9-1. Scott Lawson and Lee Orton both scored three, with Piranhas’ Don Hobbs beating Rob Lee for their only success. Don gave Lee a scare with a 2-1 sets lead, but the Appley man won the last two to win 11-8 in the fifth.

 

All players except Roger Hookey struggled to find any form in this match between Vics A and Ryde Eagles. Outright winner though was the table which played brilliantly, confusing the very best with an assortment of odd bounces. For Ryde, Roger Nevell was the only player to win, beating Mike Bulpitt 12-10, 10-12, 12-10 and 12-10. Dave Hilliam and Roger Hookey both scored impressive maximums. Mike Bulpitt beat Ron Kemp 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 and 21-19 in another close encounter.

 

CPC Gladiators beat Ryde Tigers 8-2, with George Downing and Andy Ely scoring three each. Ryde’s Paul Freeborn and Jim Hall beat Andrew Davis for the home team’s only successes. Jim and Andy played out a 5 game thriller, with Andy taking it 11-6 in the fifth.

 

Division 2

 

Saints 1 opened their campaign with a 6-4 loss to CPC Stooges, despite the best efforts of Jill Fothergill, who won three singles and the doubles. All other games went the way of Stooges, as Steve Downing, John Moyse and Kevin Allen won two apiece.

 

Ryde Lions were whitewashed by Vics B, who race to the top of the table and will be difficult to beat this year, having been relegated from Division 1 last year. Ray Ferris, Dave Newnham and Barry Joyce all winning three. For Ryde, Andy McQuillan came closest, losing to Ray 11-8 in the fifth.

 

CPC Panthers beat Vics C 7-3, with John Cornforth being the only player in the match to win three games. A number of close singles games were decided in the fifth end, Karen King and then John Winkles beating the unlucky D Cook 12-10.

 

Ryde Cheetahs overcame Havenstreet B 6-4, despite the best efforts of Dave Rendle, who won his three singles easily. The match was won in the final game, when Ryde won 11-9 in the fifth leg of the doubles.  

 

Division 3 (30 Up)

 

In the third division, Saints 2 beat Vics E 20-10, with Saints’ James winning his three games.

 

A closer game saw Vics Terminators beat Ryde Ravens 18-12, with Vics Trevor Percival scoring three wins. For Ryde, Pauline Rorke and Monty Singh both won two. Closest game saw Trevor beat Monty 11-13, 11-5 and 15-13.

 

Ryde Rooks eased to a confident win against Venturians 24-6, although Brian Voller was the only unbeaten player. Bert Paice and John Featherstone both won two for Ryde, and in reply, Roy Wiltshire won two for Venturians.
