There was a dramatic change of leadership in the Island Summer League, as Vikings were surprisingly defeated 3-2 by Tigers, for whom Peter Dove did the damage with two wins. After an absence from the game of some years, his comeback is gaining momentum.
Hurricanes gained from Vikings misfortune. They beat Mosquitos by 4-1 and so head the table by a single point with only one round to go. Lee Orton was their ace card giving big starts and winning his two matches. The doubles, in which he was joined by Jim Hall, was won 28-26, 19-26, 26-24 conceding a start of 17 to the Lewis brothers.
Eagles kept their chances very much alive with a 4-1 win against Warriors. Only one point behind the leaders, they still have their chance of honours. Roger Nevell was again the architect of the victory with two wins.
Bert Paice appeared to good effect for No Hopers with two wins against Tornados, who nevertheless won 3-2.
George Downing defied the handicaps with two wins for Gladiators against Harriers, but his effort was in vain in a 3-2 defeat.
Bears were despatched to the bottom of the table after losing 4-1 to Rookley Stallions, who profited from the return of Steve White, who won both his matches in convincing style.
A rousing finale is anticipated in next weeks’ final round, as three teams are separated by a single point.
