HURRICANES WIN THE LEAGUE - EAGLES JUST BEHIND

 

The eleventh and final round of the summer league fully lived up to expectations. When it began, only one point separated the three leading teams.

 

Hurricanes experienced a wobbly moment when George Downing defeated Lee Orton, but won the remaining four matches for a 4-1 victory. That meant that both their rivals had to win 5-0 to go level on points. Neither managed it.

 

Eagles won 3-2 in the Ryde derby against Tigers. Martin Dove won two, but Roger Nevell’s long run was ended by Peter Dove and a handicap of 9, and Eagles also lost the doubles.

 

In the meantime Vikings, who had led the table up to the penultimate round, had a bad evening, whilst No Hopers Pauline Rorke played her best table tennis of the whole season, beating even the reliable Alan Hulbert. These results consigned Vikings to third place, and Eagles ended second as winners of the Stevenage Cup.

 

Hurricanes were therefore the overall winners and will hold the Columbia Cup for a year. Scott Lawson emerged as the only unbeaten player of the competition, a rare feat from a top handicap player. He did not play a full programme, missing one or two matches not least for the Island Games in which he reached the quarter finals of the singles.

 

No Hopers sensational win enabled them to escape bottom place which position was occupied by Bears, for whom David Lewis’ good form continued.

 

Tornados enjoyed their second win of the season with a surprising 3-2 demolition of Warriors who reached this stage after being 2-0 down.

 

Rookley Stallions were again in fine form, achieving an exciting 3-2 win against Harriers. Steve White produced another double for them, but was taken into a third set by both John Moyse and John Winkles.
