Isle of Wight County Table Tennis Association (IWCTTA)

Division 1

In the Island Table Tennis League Division 1, Tigers won the local Ryde derby against Eagles 7-3. Jim Hall won three for them. The gap at the top opened further as CPC Appley whitewashed Rookley Stallions, whilst CPC Sovereigns were held to a draw by Havenstreet A. Sovereigns missed Julie Thorn. Their cause was not helped by losing the last three contests of the evening as a 5-2 lead melted away, with Havenstreet winning the doubles by 12-10 in the fifth set; a magnificent performance by Havenstreet.

Division 2

In Division 2 the lead changed hands as CPC Panthers, in third place , thrashed Saints 1 by 9-1 which also ensured a much better games average for the season. A 1-0 lead turned into a 9-1 deficit, as John Cornforth and Andrew Davis scored hat-tricks. Both teams had also played the matches postponed due to snow the previous week. Saints only drew with Newport Vics C and a 5-5 meant that two more points were dropped whilst it eased Vics relegation worries. Vics owed everything to Robert Young who won his three singles. Panthers on the other hand, again collected maximum points as they beat Ryde Rooks 7-3, adding to the losers relegation fears. There was further good work by Andrew Davis who collected his second hat-trick of the week.

Two middle table contests completed the week. CPC Stooges were well beaten by Ryde Lions for whom Martyn Garnet contributed yet another treble, and Ryde Cheetahs saw off Havenstreet B by 8-2. Mike Jose and Tom Groves had unbeaten records in the singles. Rookley HB, already assured of the title, saw off Ventvets by 7-3 and Dave Johnson produced a hat-trick which included Alan Brewster.

30-Up

In the 30-up competition Ryde Ravens defeated CPC Dynamos 18-12, Pauline Rorke and Alan Hopkins won three each. Ravens also played their vital match against Saints 2 who went down 19-11, which ended their championship hopes. Pauline Rorke produced a giant killing act as she beat Derek Pittard in straight games, but it was not enough. CPC Hawks overcame Ventvets by 21-9 which enabled them to top the table with 301 points to Saints 296. With thirty points at stake in every match that lead can disappear in an hour!
