RESULTS:

Bears 5 - No Hopers 0

Mosquitos 5 - Tigers 0 (the Tigers team withdrew at the last moment)

Vikings 4 - Rookley Stallions 1

Eagles 3 - Gladiators 2

Harriers 5 - Tornados 0

Hurricanes 5 - Warriors 0

Hurricans will be strong favourites, but the handicap system will set them some tough tasks. However, the opening match against Warriors produced a 5-0 win for Lee Orton and Scott Lawson, recent winner of the successful County Press Top Ten event.

Four players from the CPC club contested the match between Harriers and Tornados, surprisingly won 5-0 by the latter. John Moyes and John Winkles made a good start, the latter just beating Trevor Farmer 30-28 in the final leg.

Martin Dove dominated the match in which Eagles beat Gladiators 3-2. He received good starts against Paul Freeborn and George Downing and was untroubled in either match, which ensured Eagles’ victory. Bert Paice narrowly lost both of his matches 26-24 in the third set.

Karen King and Alan Hulbert, playing for Vikings, had a comfortable 4-1 victory against Rookley Stallions.

Ryde No Hopers made a bad start against Bears who beat them 5-0. No Hopers had defied the odds last season when thy fought a good campaign. The result could have been different as Tom Groves lost 23-26 and 26-28 to Andy Davis in the opening match. The next two went to the final set. Bears introduced Viktor Mokrus, playing off the bottom handicap. He will emerge a better player as a result of this competition, which has played a big part in the progress of many players over the years.
