Results from Week 2 (week ending 16th October 2009)
Division 1
CPC Gladiators take over top spot from Havenstreet, thanks to their 7-3 win against Rookley Dogs. George Downing and Andy Ely both scored three wins and together they took the doubles. Andrew Davis unluckily lost all of his games in 5 sets, getting very close to Steve White and Tom Johnson. Havenstreet themselves lost 6-4 to Shanklin Piranhas, the impressive Piyachai Chainiyom (PC) winning all of his games easily. Don Hobbs also won three, with Alan Hulbert taking him the distance, only losing 11-8 in the 5th set.
The match between CPC Appley and Newport Vics A was postponed, so both teams remain in 3rd and fourth place respectively. The two Ryde teams fought out a 5-5 draw, with Tigers Jim Hall being unbeaten, narrowly getting past Ron Kemp 13-11 in the 5th set. An impressive performance from Paul Freeborn saw him beat Martin “Flakey” Dove and Roger Nevell.
Division 2
Vics B remain firmly on top of the league with another emphatic win, this time a 9-1 win against their C team. Dave Newnham and Barry Joyce remain unbeaten, Ray Ferris losing 11-7 in the 5th to Martin Parsonage being the only success for the C team. Ryde Cheetahs move to second place, also with a 9-1 win against a weakened Saints 1 team. Mike Jose and Mike Platt scored three each, R Young for Saints beating Tom Groves 11-6 in the 5th.
In third place are CPC Stooges who beat Ryde Lions 8-2, Steve Downing taking his maximum with ease. Ian Loosemore for Ryde had mixed fortunes, beating Kevin Allen 12-10 in the 5th, and then losing 13-11 in the 5th to Stooges’ John Moyse. Havenstreet B narrowly beat CPC Panthers 6-4 but remain just behind the Panthers in the league. Dave Rendle retained his 100% record with another impressive performance. Panthers’ John Cornforth won two games, losing only to Dave 8-11, 8-11, 11-9, 5-11.
Division 3 (30 Up)
Ryde Rooks remain in top spot in Division 3 having beaten Saints 2 19-11, with the unflappable Brian Voller keeping his unbeaten record intact. Ryde Ravens move to second place with a 20-10 win against CPC Quintet (not to be confused with CPC Dynamos who appear to have disbanded....). John Rawlings for Ryde won all three of his singles, Alan Hopkins and Pauline Rorke backing him up well with two singles wins each. For CPC Maggie Preston won two, and took a game off of John.
Vics E (Balls of Steel) moved up from 5th to 3rd place with their 24-6 win against Vics F, no fewer than six of the nine singles games being won 3-0. James Halliday won three for the E team, with John Pearcey winning two for Vics F, beating Mitchell and Chester Ward, who in turn also won two.
Vics Terminators beat Venturians 21-9, with seven of the games being won 3-0. In this very strange league, the final match score would indicate an easy win for Vics, but totalling up the individual players scores saw Venturians winning 4 games and Vics winning 5.....!! The only unbeaten player in the match was Terminators Trevor Percival.
In a second outing this week for the CPC Quintet (or should that be Dynamos?) team, they beat Vics F 16-14 in a very close encounter. 8 of the 10 games were 3-0, and only Vics’ Mark Millwood remained unbeaten. Roy Bickler and Harry Metz won two each for CPC.
