Division 1

The penultimate round of First Division matches was a formality with all league positions now certain. Champions CPC Appley swept aside Newport Vics B, who put up spirited resistance and did not deserve a 10-0 defeat. Havenstreet played twice. A win against Rookley Stallions by 7-3 was followed by a similar defeat against Ryde Eagles, Roger Nevell and Ron Kemp winning three each in the later match. Ryde Tigers could not match their colleagues success and went down to Vics A by another 7-3 score. Dave Hilliam won his three singles for the victors. A further outing by Rookley Stallions brought another defeat, this time by 2-8 against CPC Sovereigns, Julie Thorn and Lee Orton winning three apiece.

Division 2

The remaining match in Division 2 produced a 6-4 win for Ryde Cheetahs against Saints 1, who had long been in second place but were pipped by CPC Panthers last week. Their 6-4 defeat opening a gap that had Saints remaining in third place and Cheetahs, who beat them 6-4, confirmed their fourth position. Mike Platt was the man of the match with three singles wins to clinch victory.

30-Up

In the 30-up competition CPC Dynamos won the bottom of the table clash against Ventvets 21-9. Maggie Preston and Gaus Jilani concluding the season with hat-tricks. Vics Terminators were crushed 11-19 by Ryde Ravens whom this confirms in third place. Trevor Percival suffered a rare defeat against Alan Hopkins, who was then defeated by improving Clive Routledge.

The big match of the round brought together Saints 2 and CPC Hawks in the match to decide the title. Hawks needed a six point margin to equal Saints and their 18-12 victory did just that, leaving both teams with 355 points. The competition is only its third year and the rules do not provide an answer for this eventuality. Two possibilities are a count back on points which would require the examination of 600 sets, or a play off between the sides in which the title goes to the winners.

The Isle of Wight Management Committee will have to decide. In the meanwhile Kevin Allen was the man of the match with three good wins, well supported by Harry Metz with two.
