Division 1
Only four matches remained to conclude the Division 1 programme in the IOW table tennis league.
Newport Vics A beat a weakened Ryde Eagles team 8-2 thanks to hat-tricks by Keith Taylor and Pedro Lopez, although Martin Dove and Ron Kemp excelled to beat the steady Dave Hilliam. CPC Sovereigns were given a harder ride by Ryde Tigers. Reserve Steve Downing lost three and Jim Hall had a notable five set victory against Don Hobbs. However, Sovereigns won the rest with Lee Orton in particularly good form with three wins.
Rookley Stallions comfortably won the battle of the bottom teams, beating Vics B 8-2, with Tom Johnson recording a treble. Champions CPC Appley were again unbeatable in a 10-0 rout of Havenstreet A. Alan Hulbert nearly broke the ice for the losers when he took Mark Knowles to a 10-12 fifth set.
30-Up
The management committee of the Isle of Wight County has deliberated on the tie for the top places of the 30-up competition, in which Saints 2 and CPC Hawks finished level with 355 points each. The verdict was a replay which will be staged at Newport Vics on a date to be agreed.
