There was a shake-out at the top of the Isle of Wight Summer League. There were three joint leaders in the last round. Now Vikings alone are on top. They enjoyed a relatively bloodless victory against Bears. Alan Hulbert continued his unbeaten run and Karen King lent staunch support.

Hurricanes were involved in a terrific match against Tigers and five contests of such class are seldom seen in one match of the event. Tigers fielded Island Champion Alex Rorke and his match with Scott Lawson, the winner of the County Press Top 10 was eagerly awaited. Scott won the match in straight sets and added to his growing reputation. He was the match winner of the night, as he also defeated Ron Kemp (with a start of 9) and also figured in the winning doubles with guest player Jim Hall, a tough match going the distance. However, the 3-2 victory was not enough to remain team league leaders.

Similarly, Harriers were also deprived of their lead as they only defeated bottom of the table No Hopers 3-2 after an excellent handicap match. John Winkles maintained his unbeaten record for the season. This included an epic match against Pauline Rorke, to whom he gave a start of 5, wining the third set 27-25.

Gladiators, who were thought to have an outside chance of the title, had a good win against Warriors, but the 3-2 margin did little to boost their hopes. Mike Jose, getting a start of 9, defeated George Downing, and with a start of 6 beat Paul Freeborn.

Mosquitos were stung 5-0 by Eagles, for whom Bert Paice and Martin Dove excelled, with all but one game being settled in two.

Rookley Stallions move up the table via a 4-1 win against Tornados, Carl Rye and Tom Johnson winning their singles, but not the doubles.

It had been the best of the three rounds of matches so far.
