Division 1
Newport Vics A, champions for so many years, are on a comeback trail. They thrashed a weakened Ryde Eagles 10-0 and so moved into third place. A lot of hard work remains, if they wish to overtake the two CPC teams who are in the lead. CPC Appley whitewashed Havenstreet, but Sovereigns were given a hard time by Ryde Tigers whom they beat only 7-3. Paul Freeborn was particularly impressive for the losers with two wins. Don Hobbs alone saved the league leaders with his hat-trick. Vics B missed a rare chance to improve their league position against Rookley Stallions, but their 7-3 defeat leaves them firmly in bottom place. It was a good time for Iain Hall to record his first treble of the season which devastated Vics in the end.
Division 2
Rookley HB are running away with Division 2. Even the sight of their former star Brian Voller in the Ryde Rooks line-up in no way deterred them. Rookley won 9-1 and Voller suffered his first defeats of the season, as Paul White and Carl Rye beat him. Surprise package CPC Panthers are in 2nd place, 7 points behind. They beat Saints 1 6-4. In an eventful match Panthers led 5-0 and looked superhuman, then struck a reverse note, losing the next four matches, but winning the doubles to scrape home. Ventmen and CPC Stooges parted at 5 all. Ventmen, in third place were favourites, but Steve Downing was in indominable form for the Panthers, winning three. In a Ryde local derby Cheetahs beat Lions 6-4. Mike Jose played the main part with his three singles wins. Vics C are getting anchored in bottom place and the gap is widening. Havenstreet B beat them 7-3 reinforced by former star Rob Warren who knew enough to win his three singles.
30 Up
In the 30 up competition CPC Hawks returned to winning ways keeping Ventvets in bottom place via a 19-11 victory to which Kevin Allen contributed three singles wins. Ryde Ravens missed a golden chance to go top, as they beat CPC Dynamos 16-14, missing out on the chance of rather more points. However the losers had won 6 of the 9 singles and led 14-10 with two matches to go. Losing both 3-0 defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory. They had played well, but in the end not well enough.
