THE SUPERVETS (over 60) TOURNAMENT

18 stalwarts entered this Handicapped tournament held at Newport Vics, being drawn into six groups and playing on three tables. Two from each group +4 best losers.
Group 1: Roy Wiltshire +4, overcame Brian Voller and John Moyse +1, Brian also qualified beating the latter +4, 13-18, 20-18 and 19-17.
Group 2: Current Champion Alan Hulbert beat Harold George +8, 19-12, 19-13, also Len Brown +15, 23-18, 23-16. Len +8, lost to Harold 15-20,14-20.
Group 3: Harry Metz +9 surprisingly beat Dave Newnham 20-18,20-15, then off scratch Dave Williams 16-7, 16-13. The latter then +10 lost to Dave N, 17-21, 24-26.
Group 4: Tom Groves won this group beating Dot Millmore +8, 20-17, 14-20, & 20-16, then Ted Martin +4, 19-17, 18-13. Dot then overcame the latter +4, 18-14,12-18,18-13. (A query arose at the semi-final stage where Ted claimed that in this last match, the scores were recorded incorrectly. This was found to be so, and apologies were extended to him).
Group 5: Dave Rendle giving John Winkles a +5 start, won 18-13, 18-13, gave Maggie Preston +9, won 20-15, 20-16. The lady +4, then lost to John, 13-18,9-18.
Group 6: Joy Wickens gave Bert Paice +2, and won a tough encounter 17-15, 12-17, 17 14. Trevor Farmer lost to both, with a +7 against Joy 15-19 & 18-20, and Bert giving a +5, 18-20, 16-18.
Q-Final 1: Alan Hulbert took on Roy Wiltshire +5, and won handsomely 18-14, 18-12.
Q-Final 2: Harry Metz, the quiet one, +5, won this three setter against Joy Wickens, 18-11, 15-18 & 18-11.
Q-Final 3: Bert Paice +2, lost the first 13-17, then with his back hand drives scoring well won the match 17-13, 17-11.
Q-Final 4: Dot Millmore +14, seemed out of it losing the first 17-23, but with steady chop won through 23-12, 23-14.
Semi-Final 1: Bert v Harry +3, was quite enthralling where the former won the first 17-11. Back came Harry, countering the back hand drives of his opponent, 17-14. The third end was also tight with the more experienced Bert winning out 18-16.
Semi-Final 2: Alan worked hard to take the first 24-22 from Dot +15, then class told and he won the Semi 23-17.
Final: Alan won this hard hitting final by beating Bert +9, 22-20, 20-16, thus winning the trophy for the third time, equalling Dave Williams record.
